One night in the spring of 1947, I heard a voice while I was sleeping. “You must seek the ‘head’, the ‘head’ is at Antou village.” Afterwards I asked around in Antou village who is the ‘head’ of Antou church. Of course, Christ is the head of the church, I should have been looking for Christ in Antou church, but my understanding at that time was that I should be looking for the leader of the church. I eventually located the leader of the church at Antou, it was Deacon Yang Shu-cong.
I asked around where Deacon Yang lived and went to his home to ask him about the Bible and God’s word. Through some discussion I learnt his church observed the Sabbath on Saturdays, and the name of the church was “True Jesus Church”. I was not convinced and debated with him saying, “Your church is the true church so does that mean all the other Christian and Protestant churches are false? All the other Christian and Protestant churches, the government offices and even the schools accept the Lord’s Day is on Sundays but you observe it on Saturdays?
I went back to Deacon Yang’s home two, three times more to discuss the truth. On one occasion, a preacher named Yang Sheng-Nian was also present. Preacher Yang mentioned Hebrews 4:9, “There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God”.
At the time my understanding of this verse was the Sabbath day was on Saturday, but the “Sabbath-rest” could also refer to Sunday, reserved for the people of God, so it is not wrong for other churches to worship on Sunday also. Preacher Yang explained to me that God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh. God’s rest is not of this world, where He is, there is eternal rest. However, for us on Earth there is a Sabbath day rest (Saturday), it is one of the ten commandments that believers should abide by (and continue to preserve). Sunday being the first day of the week, subsequently Saturday becomes the seventh day - the Sabbath Day. I was moved and convinced by Preacher Yang’s explanation, and continued to join True Jesus Church’s family gatherings listening to Deacon Yang and Preacher Yang sermonize.
